CFAR travel insurance: what it covers and how much you can claim
Plans can change before a trip, and ordinary travel insurance "cancellation" cover usually handles only sudden events such as serious illness, death, natural disasters or outbound travel alerts. According to this Openholidays round-up, reasons like a break-up, leave being refused or a delayed visa generally fall outside that cover.
CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) is designed for these cases. The article says payouts are typically 50% to 75% of the non-refundable amount, with caps of roughly $20,000 to $25,000. It lists FWD, Allianz and MSIG plans as examples, each with different percentages and purchase deadlines.
Note that CFAR usually has to be bought within a set number of days after paying a deposit or booking flights, and the trip must be cancelled before departure. Terms follow each insurer's latest policy, so check the benefit table before buying.
Editor’s noteIf you want flexible cancellation cover, buy early and check the payout percentage, cap and purchase deadline.
