Jamia Mosque: A Century-Old Mosque in Central

Tucked along Shelley Street in Central, Jamia Mosque dates from the 1910s and is described as Hong Kong's oldest mosque. It was funded by Bombay merchant Haji Mohamed Essack Elias to replace an earlier mosque on the site, and can hold around 400 worshippers. Built in concrete and brick, it shows rich Islamic architectural features and was declared a monument in 2022. It remains an active place of worship and gathering for the local Muslim community. Pair a visit with Central Market, PMQ or the Mid-Levels Escalator, and check opening information before you go, as arrangements may change around religious activities.
