Haw Par Mansion: Grade 1 Historic Building in Tai Hang, Wan Chai, Revived as a Cultural Villa

Haw Par Mansion on Tai Hang Road in Wan Chai was built in 1936 by Mr Aw Boon Haw, named after himself and his brother Aw Boon Par. The mansion is in Chinese Renaissance style and is one of the few surviving examples of its kind in Hong Kong; it was graded a Grade 1 historic building in 2009.

The former Wan Chin Yau Garden next door also opened to the public in 1936, was demolished and redeveloped in the 1990s, and became a collective memory for Hongkongers. Selected relics and statues from the garden have been restored and installed in the mansion and its garden.

Reports say the mansion is being revitalised as a "cultural villa", expected to open in phases by the end of this year, with advance booking and a visitor cap, and plans for exhibitions, a cafe and an artist-in-residence programme.
