Blue House in Wan Chai: A Grade 1 Historic Building Reborn

The Blue House stands on Stone Nullah Lane in Wan Chai. Built in the 1920s, it is a four-storey pre-war building with wide balconies and shops below homes. It was painted blue during 1990s repairs, hence the name. Together with two nearby tong lau it forms a cluster that won a 2017 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation, recognised for its "retain houses, retain people" approach. After revitalisation it keeps residential use, adds new tenants and a Hong Kong Story House running workshops and community tours. It was graded a Grade 1 historic building in 2009.
